MN CD 3 TEA PARTY PATRIOTS PRESENT
"FREE TO CHOOSE:" A 10 WEEK COURSE IN FREE MARKETS W/ MILTON FRIEDMAN
Wednesday, September 15th, 2010
7pm
Maple Grove Library, Main Street Meeting Room
ongoing schedule below
Join us for a ten week study of Milton Friedman's PBS series
Free to Choose. Each episode contains a half-hour presentation by Friedman covering free market issues, followed by a half-hour discussion with academics and economic stakeholders, many of which are socialists. Friedman takes them all on at once in defense of free markets.
Handouts will be provided to aid viewers in taking note of the arguments. Following the screening of each episode, we'll spend an hour discussing and debating what we saw and how it applies to our modern circumstances.
This course will be a great way to bolster your ability to defend free market principles in the public discourse. We also invite folks who disagree with Friedman's point of view to attend and engage respectfully. This is a conversation which must move beyond the proverbial choir.
Free to Choose: A Personal Statement maintains that the free market works best for all members of a society, provides examples of how the free market engenders prosperity, and maintains that it can solve problems where other approaches have failed. Published in January 1980, the 297 page book contains 10 chapters.
Milton Friedman won the
Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1976. Contrary to normal practice the book was written after the TV series was produced, although the line "Basis for the acclaimed public television triumph" is written on the front cover, using the program transcripts as reference. The book was on the
United States best sellers list for 5 weeks.
PBS telecast the series, beginning in January 1980; the general format was that of Dr. Friedman visiting and narrating a number of success and failure stories in history, which Dr. Friedman attributes to capitalism or the lack thereof (e.g.
Hong Kong is commended for its free markets, while
India is excoriated for relying on
centralized planning especially for its
protection of its traditional
textile industry). Following the primary show, Dr. Friedman would engage in discussion with a number of selected persons, such as
Donald Rumsfeld (then of
G.D. Searle & Company).
All future meetings for this course will occur at the Maple Grove Library in the Main Street Meeting Room on the following schedule:

Rally to Recapture America
A local committee of 30 citizens including the Mayor of Watertown, KJ McDonald as Committee Chair, has organized and sponsored a rally to recapture America for “We the People”. The first of its kind in Minnesota, the non-partisan political rally to be held in Watertown on September 8th is expected to draw elected officials from all levels of government representing the second and sixth congressional districts. Rally Coordinator ...and Committee Co-Chair Ben Maas said they expect to fill all 600 seats of the recently built Watertown Performing Arts Center.
This free event is open to the general public to hear from and be heard by their elected officials. Invitations have been extended to Democratic and Republican elected officials and candidates as well as Tea Party adherents. Most have already committed to attend. Michele Bachmann and John Kline are currently expected to be the headline speakers.
The rally should be of particular interest to those who are concerned with the direction that the current leadership in Washington, DC and St Paul is taking our nation. The rally plans to encourage citizen participation and personal action to change the course of events regardless of political party or political persuasion.
Each speaker will be given an allotted time to speak followed by a limited number of questions, time permitting.
The Wednesday, September 8th rally will be held at the Performing Arts Center at the public Watertown-Mayer High School on Highway 25, half a mile west of Watertown. The doors of the 600 seat capacity auditorium will open at 6:00pm with the rally to begin at 6:30pm. The event is planned to conclude by 9pm. There will be no cost for admission.
Mayor McDonald remarked that “We are pleased to invite all voters from primarily the second and sixth congressional districts to join us in our recently constructed Performing Arts Center. The seats are very comfortable.
This quality facility was chosen by the Minnesota Orchestra in 2009 for a public performance.”
“Most folks never get the chance to talk directly to their elected officials”, commented Committee Co-Chair Ben Maas. “I’ve been to plenty of rallies where you hear a lot of taking points from politicians. We want to give citizens a chance to be heard. This ‘tea party type’ rally should accomplish just that.”
The following have been invited:
• Senator Amy Klobuchar (MN)
• Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (MN-CD6)
• Congressman John Kline (MN-CD2)
• Governor Tim Pawlenty (MN)
• Gubernatorial Candidate Tom Emmer (R)
• Gubernatorial Candidate Mark Dayton (DFL)
• State Senator Amy Koch (SD19)
• State Senator Julianne Ortman (SD34)
• State Representative Paul Kohls (34A)
• State Representative Candidate Joe McDonald (19B)
• State Representative Candidate Ernie Leidiger (34A)
